Understanding Different Types of Breast Cancer and the Importance of Acceptance

Aireen Rivera Season 1 Episode 2

Breast cancer encompasses various types, each with distinct characteristics and treatment approaches. Here are some of the most common types:

  1. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC): The most common type, IDC starts in the milk ducts and invades surrounding breast tissue.
  2. Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC): This type begins in the lobules (milk-producing glands) and can be more challenging to detect because it may not form a distinct lump.
  3. Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS): A non-invasive cancer where abnormal cells are contained within the ducts. While it’s not considered invasive, it can increase the risk of developing invasive breast cancer later.
  4. Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (LCIS): Not technically cancer, but an indicator that a person may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer in the future.
  5. Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: A type of IDC that lacks three common receptors (estrogen, progesterone, and HER2), making it more aggressive and harder to treat with hormone therapies.
  6. HER2-Positive Breast Cancer: This cancer has an overexpression of the HER2 protein, which promotes the growth of cancer cells. Targeted therapies are available for this type.
  7. Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC): A rare and aggressive form that blocks lymph vessels in the skin and breast, often causing swelling and redness.
  8. Paget’s Disease of the Nipple: A rare form that starts in the ducts of the nipple and spreads to the skin and area of the nipple, often associated with underlying breast cancer.
  9. Phyllodes Tumor: Although not a breast cancer per se, these tumors can be benign or malignant and originate in the connective tissue of the breast.

Each type may require different treatment strategies, emphasizing the importance of accurate diagnosis and personalized care.
